Sof Oma Cave

These caves were a long way from our home. We drove as far as we could and then had to hire ponies and ride the rest of the way, camping at night.

Gully was with us as usual and led the way. There was a river running through the cave which was not very big but was very fast. Gully decided that we should proceed in threes. Gully followed by two of us. We tied a rope around our waists and waded into the stream.

It nearly swept us off our feet but we clung onto the rope and crept along. It seemed to go on forever but then suddenly we were out of the stream and found ourselves in an enormous cave, the roof of which we could barely see, even though we shone our torches upwards. Gully led us forward and soon we could see.

Crack of light in the roof which grew larger and larger and then we were out into the open air and felt safe again. Our horses had been bought over the top of the cave.

If we had been adults I think we might have had a glass of brandy as it was we lit a camp fire and boiled some water and made tea which we poured into mugs and put our hands around them. I think this was the most exciting and frightening adventure we had ever had.
