Rhine Trip with Audrey

Lorelei Rock – The Singing Lady Statue

We flew over to Germany, I think to Collnge and then got on a train which took us bit by bit up the Rhine valley. We particularly wanted to see the Lorili Rock where reputedly a mermaid sang a love song to her dead lover. I think we must have been the only ladies on our own on the train, we were treated with great care and often sat in the front carriage where the driver of the train sat. It was a beautiful journey through beautiful hills and valleys. Sometimes the train stopped to let people on or off. And the driver would help us off and tell us how long we could stay. It was nearly always long enough for us to walk a bit and meet up with people and chat. Either in German which Audrey could speak or French which I could manage. I seem to remember that we spent the odd night or two in hotels along the way where we could get supper and breakfast and buy drinks and sandwiches to keep us going.
