These were rather a long time ago, so the details may be a bit muddled but the general effect is still very much in my memory. We were living in Ethiopia at that time.
I suppose we went by plane, in which case it would have been by E A L. (Ethiopian Airlines)
But we could also have driven down there. There was a good all-weather road down to the border with Kenya and if you had the right permissions to cross the border (which we would have had) you could drive into Kenya. The roads on the Ethiopian side of the border were excellent but those on the Kenya side were badly maintained and obviously not much used. However, we persevered and finally got down to Nairobi. One of our main aims was to visit as many game parks as we could. At that time there were only very few game parks in Ethiopia. So, the first game park we visited must have been the one nearest to Nairobi. The game parks had areas where visitors could park and camp but we would have had to conform to their rules.
We certainly visited the game park nearest to Nairobi and saw the local animals (lion, leopard, possibly various apes/monkeys) However the main memories I have is of the flamingos on Lake Naivasha. The first time I saw them was with Michael when we lived in Kenya, he was an agricultural officer there and we could take local leave. The second time was with my family after we had driven down. Lake Naivasha is a very shallow lake, so the flamingos stand in the lake with their beautiful plumage out of the water. It is the most incredible and beautiful sight I have ever seen.
