Ambo was about 50 miles from Addis Ababa. It had hot springs coming out of the rocks in one corner. They were so hot that you could not sit in the pool. It flowed into a large swimming pool which was warm and made it lovely to swim in. There was a grassed area where we put up tents and slept over nights in them. There were also a lot of crows flying looking for scraps of food to grab.
One time we visited there, we had a lady called Gym Ward staying with us, she wore glasses, the sun must have been shining on them and suddenly one of the crows swooped down and tried to grab the glasses which it managed to do, right off of Gym’s face. Luckily it decided that it was not worth eating and dropped them, but poor Gym had a terrible fright.
There was a hotel/restaurant across the road, we would sometimes go there for a meal. From the campsite to the road there were deep canals taking the water away into a river, I slipped, and half fell into a canal and cut my leg which then bled copiously. Luckily there was a hospital there, so I went and had my leg stitched up.
