There was a secret cave at the foot of the Bomfata waterfall, you could only see it if you clambered down the fall, this was quite dangerous. This was quite dangerous as the waterfall was sheer and slippery from the water going down it.
The attraction was that you might see the cliff springers, this was a type of very small deer which could leap down steep cliffs. They had tiny feet that could fit into tiny cracks of the rock face. We would often see them leaping from rock to rock. They are greyish brown and about the size of a small goat.
One day Michael Langdon (Grandpa) was climbing down to the bottom of the waterfall where he saw a small cave in the rock face. He managed to put his hand into the cave a pulled out a long crystal, about 5 inches in length. We all wondered if it was a diamond, but it was completely the wrong shape. This made him special in the eyes of the cliff springers. They were always there to ensure his safety as he walked down steep paths to the valley below.
They took it in turns to follow him hidden among the crags in long grass. Grandpa sometimes heard them but very rarely saw them. When he left Ethiopia, the cliff springers took the crystal from him and hid it back in the valley.
