One of our favourite places to go on holiday was at Lake Langano. One of the Rift Valley lakes. We camped there and could leave our tents down there as we had the faithful Lemna in attendance. He had always helped us when we were camping there for years.
We had large campfires every night to keep us warm and to scare off any hyenas. Piers remembers this and how I took refuge in their tent as there were hyenas around.
Lemna is still alive but an old man now. We could not drink the water from the lake as it was full of minerals and tasted awful, so we had to take water with us.
We had li-los to sleep on but once, the strong wind that used to get up each evening blew one of the li-los into the lake and that was the last we saw of it.
On one occasion David Galloway (Mikes nephew) was staying with us. We had acquired a boat with a sail, but the evening wind was so strong that it blew the boat over and it sank.
We used to fish in the lake but the Tilipia fish which were good to eat were scarce. We mostly caught catfish, which were enormous but nasty to eat. Luckily the local people liked them, so they were given to them.
