Willie Morris, Ambassador to Ethiopia 1972 – 1975

Willie Morris came from Yorkshire and spoke with a pronounced Yorkshire accent, he was entirely free of pompous circumstance. The embassy was run quite free of stuffiness. Parties there were very relaxed. Ghislain was a great wife of his as she was also quite free. Some of the embassy staff who thought themselves as important did not like the new tone at the embassy. Piers remembers willie coming to the farm in his Citroen car. The lights moved as he went round corners. Willie showed Piers how this worked when he came to Mulu. When we were kicked out of Ethiopia, we came on ahead of Mike because Piers and Christopher were starting their summer holidays and didn’t have anywhere to go. Willie was due to go on leave but refused to leave until Mike was safely on the plane, he walked out to the plane with Mike and saw him up the steps and get on board. We have been deeply appreciative of his help. We visited them in Oxford and also they came up to see us when we were on a barge trip on the river Thames.
